The American persimmon, also known as Eastern persimmon, is a native fruit tree that is easy to care for and can grow in any type of soil. Unlike Asian persimmons, which need to be extremely soft before they're edible, American persimmons are intensely flavorful and have better tolerance of pests and diseases. They produce small, delicious fruit that ripen from September to December. While most cultivars are self-pollinating, wild trees require both male and female flowers for pollination. American persimmons were historically gathered in the wild but are now gaining popularity in home gardens.
